The Downwards Side To Diy

Well, shoot.  Remember on Fri when I told yous I simply had some finishing touches on the dining room tabular array I'm refinishing?  That meant all I had left to create was position on a top coat of polyurethane.  I had stripped, scraped, sanded, filled, sanded, wiped, stained, wiped, stained, together with done lots of waiting inwards betwixt all of those steps!

I posted things similar this on Instagram-

And hence I position on the get-go coat of poly.  And I waited iv hours (or so).  And hence I position on a minute coat.  And later a niggling piece I went to depository fiscal establishment represent on it, together with in that location were cloudy streaks all over the top of the table.  Hmmm, I've refinished several pieces together with that had never happened before.  So I waited until the adjacent morning, thinking it must live drying unevenly.

(it was genuinely much worse than it looks here)

In the morning, even hence there.  And I knew something wasn't right.  I tried to convince myself that peradventure it looked similar a cool faux-finish.  My sweetness immature adult woman said she liked it together with it kind-of looked similar metal.  I called the goodness (a.k.a. my Dad) together with picked his brain.  He said to laissez passer it a 24-hour interval or two, that it mightiness simply live taking an extra long fourth dimension to dry out thoroughly.

I gave it some other overnight, together with zippo had changed the adjacent morning.  I knew in that location was zippo I could create but start over.  Womp womp.

So, this is where I am.

I've re-stripped, re-sanded, together with am currently re-staining.  Yesterday I visited Munger's, my favorite Mom together with Pop pigment store, together with sought some advice earlier I proceeded amongst a top coat again.  I was genuinely considering waxing the top this time, which I've never done on a refinished slice before.  He strongly encouraged poly since it would live a high-use piece.

He besides genuinely felt that I in all likelihood didn't permit the get-go coat of my poly dry out thoroughly plenty earlier applying the minute coat, together with the remaining wet from the get-go coat simply got trapped inwards there.  He gave me a dandy tip to overstep along.  He said when yous recollect your previous coat is dry, press your pollex inwards an inconspicuous place.  If in that location is whatever stain or residual on your finger, or if it leaves your fingerprint or feels tacky at all, it's non dry out yet.

For the record, I DID brand an endeavour to follow directions on all of the products every bit I went along.  The poly tin strength out was "fast-drying" together with said to hold back 3-5 hours betwixt coats.  I checked at simply about iv hours together with idea it was dry out plenty to proceed.  Guess not.  It's been SO hot together with glutinous here, I'm certain humidity was a real probable ingredient every bit well.

Here's hoping circular 2 plant out better!  Just wanted to permit yous know, fifty-fifty amongst all the attention taken to create things right, together with fifty-fifty though I've done this before, inwards the basis of DIY things don't ever plough out the means they should.  Sometimes, that's a happy mistake.  And sometimes, yous guide keep to live willing to bit it together with start over.  I similar the get-go pick much better.

What's your worst DIY fail?
